Planning Board Victory- 3/15/22
During this week’s planning board meeting on March 15, Chairman Barry Snyder and the other members changed their recommended building heights for downtown Venice to a 35’ maximum. Exemptions are still a possibility, however this is a great step towards preserving our historic district and also a great example of officials responding to public pressure. On Wednesday there was a Gondolier article about the meeting that began “the battle isn’t over.” The Venice City council […]
Planning Board Address- 3/15/22
My Venice City Planning Board speech at the Tuesday March 15th meeting is a response to their 2 presentations on February 8th, when I didn’t get a chance to speak. However, their following meeting may make my words seem out of sync since they responded to the public outcry against increased building heights in our historic downtown. They voted to recommend a 35’ maximum building height in our historic downtown Venice. It was a great […]
March 8, 2022- Council Meeting
Several members of the public spoke to the council this morning in opposition to increased building heights downtown. I hope we can keep increasing public attendance at meetings as a visible show of strength. This is my speech: Good Morning Council Members, Today marks 2 weeks since I introduced myself to you and announced a public petition asking you to preserve our historic downtown with a 35’ building height limitation. I had high hopes then […]
Top Reasons To Preserve Downtown
I talked to hundreds of people over this past weekend while giving out brochures and the response was overwhelmingly supportive, but there was one guy who kept asking “why, why should we preserve it (Venice downtown). I was too busy to pay him much attention but now I wonder if he just didn’t “get it”. So here are my top reasons why we should protect downtown Venice: The ambiance. It’s spacious and welcoming and laid […]
A Great Kickoff Weekend!
A wonderful weekend: lovely weather, great food, friendly people… what could be nicer than a February weekend in Venice, Florida? I don’t know because I spent this first weekend of our website and petition intro giving out SDV flyers to neighbors, tourists, snowbirds, etc. who all seemed in a good mood. Maybe because we were all out and about in the gorgeous weather and socializing again. I visited the farmers’ market as well as the […]
Rooftop Restaurant Planned Within 35′ Height Limit
If you missed this article by Larry R. Humes in the Feb 16, 2022 issue of the Venice Gondolier, you can read it here. The Venice Avenue building owners have big plans for their property, but they don’t exceed the current 35′ building height limit. The design seems to fit with the surrounding aesthetics as well and will be a welcome addition to the avenue. Maybe someone should tell the city council members that we […]
Feb.22, 2022- First Day Received 19 Signatures
Nineteen people agreed to preserve historic downtown Venice on the very first day and gave their signatures to the petition. It wasn’t even 24 hours…I’m thrilled, we can DO this!
Feb. 22, 2022- Council Meeting
I spoke at the Venice City Council meeting this morning. Here is my speech: “Good morning Venice Council Members and neighbors. I wanted to come this morning to introduce myself. My name is Lisa Jarvio and I’ve been a city resident and voter for many years. I’m currently a healthcare worker but I have a long background in tourism. I also love Venice and I’ve made it my home. The reason I’ve come this morning […]
Feb.8, 2022- Joint Planning/Council Meeting
The Venice Planning Commission held a joint meeting with the Venice City Council at the Nokomis Avenue Community Center. Approximately 100 members of the public showed up but were allowed very little time to talk at the end of a long meeting. Mr.Snyder of the planning board gave 2 extensive presentations in which he advised an increase of the building heights downtown. He conceded that there had been recent public outcry against this measure, but […]
