Top Reasons To Preserve Downtown
I talked to hundreds of people over this past weekend while giving out brochures and the response was overwhelmingly supportive, but there was one guy who kept asking “why, why should we preserve it (Venice downtown). I was too busy to pay him much attention but now I wonder if he just didn’t “get it”. So here are my top reasons why we should protect downtown Venice:
The ambiance. It’s spacious and welcoming and laid back. Anyone can feel comfortable going to get a cup of coffee.
It’s a great place to socialize and get out among your neighbors.
It’s beautiful and picturesque. How many downtowns do you know have such interesting architecture, and then ends in a park and a beach?
It’s vibrant and has many successful family-owned shops and restaurants.
It has many historic buildings. The combination of Italian and Florida styles are unique.
There are great places to people-watch with benches and outdoor cafes.
There are nice public spaces with parks and fountains, as well as the sports courts right across from city hall.
The weather is usually terrific in this little microclimate on the Gulf.
The Banyan trees, palms, murals, fountains and statuary all add to the beauty. And let’s give kudos to the fantastic work by the Venice Area Beautification volunteers, for keeping plantings, flowers and hanging pots always looking gorgeous.
It’s a pleasant outdoor space to sit, walk, jog, bike, golf cart, scooter, drive, etc.
It feels like a step back in time. I feel relaxed here whatever time of day.
It embodies the cultural history of Venice and transcends our individual lives.
It’s just a nice place to bring out of state friends and family.
